A spherical plain bearing is a type of sliding bearing featuring sliding contact surfaces formed by an inner spherical surface and an outer spherical surface; it allows for rotation and oscillation at various angles during operation. These bearings are manufactured using specialized processes such as surface phosphating, fracturing, liner insertion, and spraying. They are characterized by high load-carrying capacity, impact resistance, corrosion resistance, wear resistance, self-aligning capabilities, and good lubrication performance.
The structure of a spherical plain bearing is simpler than that of a rolling-element bearing, consisting primarily of an inner ring with an outer spherical surface and an outer ring with an inner spherical surface. These bearings are typically used for low-speed oscillating motion (i.e., angular motion). Because the sliding surfaces are spherical, they can also accommodate tilting motion (i.e., self-aligning motion) within a certain angular range, allowing them to function properly even when there is significant misalignment between the supported shaft and the housing bore.
